Barrymore, set in 1942, follows acclaimed American actor John Barrymore (Christopher Plummer), a member of one of Hollywood's most well-known multi-generational theatrical dynasties. No longer a leading box office star, the film finds Barrymore reckoning with the ravages of his life of excess. He has rented a grand, old theatre to rehearse for a backer's audition to raise money for a revival of his 1920 Broadway triumph in Richard III. It leads him to look back on the highs and lows of his stunning career and remarkable life. -- (C) The Film Sales Company

Review For Movie Barrymore
The interest is in Plummer himself-who he is, what he can do.
Stanley Kauffmann-The New Republic

Mr. Plummer stumbles beautifully, poignantly and often, leering and searching through a haze of memory or, with concern edged with panic, calling for 'a line, a line' much as Richard III calls for a horse.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

You wish you could be seeing this performance live, as it's meant to be seen - but lacking that, "Barrymore" on the big screen provides its own thrills.
Moira MacDonald-Seattle Times

Plummer is marvelous, flitting between reminiscence and Shakespearean recitation as a gifted artist aware of his own wretchedness.
Lisa Schwarzbaum-Entertainment Weekly

Plummer's Barrymore shows flashes of glory as he delivers bits and pieces of various Shakespearean roles.
Lou Lumenick-New York Post

While Plummer acts his heart out, the script becomes one punchline after another.
Joe Neumaier-New York Daily News

Plummer is phenomenal, but be warned: you really have to like one-person shows in order to enjoy this 84-minute tour de force.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

In spite of creating a CGI world around Plummer, much is lost in this translation, making an impressive performance from him seem inert.
Staci Layne Wilson-StaciWilson.com

As an acting masterclass, it's educational and entertaining.
James Croot-Flicks.co.nz

Christopher Plummer works hard to give us his idea of John Barrymore in this record of a theatrical tour-de-force, which is more dramatically florid than biographically enlightening.
David Noh-Film Journal International

Director Erik Canuel fails to deliver us from the inevitable hermeticism of the material.
Andrew Schenker-Slant Magazine

Erik Canuel, who directed and adapted the work, employs a host of cinematic techniques to enhance Plummer's spell-binding turn as a crotchety has-been who, in 1942, attempts to revive his career by playing Richard III.
Jim Schembri-3AW

In the hands of an actor of such calibre as Plummer, it is riveting stuff. And often hilarious, risqué, even coarse on occasion
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking-that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well. When small-time magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) pulls one flimflam too many, he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great wizard-and just maybe into a better man as well. -- (C) Walt Disney

Review For Movie Oz the Great and Powerful
An imaginative mix of live-action and CGI that pays homage to the iconic images and timeless sense of wonder in the classic The Wizard of Oz without being too deferential.
James Berardinelli-ReelViews

Oz the Great and Powerful is entirely serviceable family entertainment. Problem is, serviceable doesn't quite cut it when you're talking about the magical land of Oz.
Randy Myers-San Jose Mercury News

Aside from a trio of witches that can hold its own with Eastwick's in the dishiness department, Oz the Great and Powerful is a peculiarly joyless occasion.
David Edelstein-New York Magazine

Let us take a moment to praise two great and surprisingly powerful characters: a winged monkey and a wee girl made out of china. Because so much human wonder resides in these two creations of make-up, puppetry, digital effects and lovely performances.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

The new Oz falls short of the 1939 Oz in charm and innocence, and certainly in songs. But as family entertainment, it's hard to fault such a rapturous spectacle and astute, suspenseful piece of storytelling.
Tom Charity-CNN.com

Oz the Great and Powerful somehow manages to be both slavish to its hallowed template (when convenient) and completely tone-deaf to the magic that made it a one-of-a-kind cultural milestone.
Chris Vognar-Dallas Morning News

This is the kind of movie that doesn't so much rush off the screen as it prances off with its nose turned up in the air.
David Keyes-Cinemaphile.org

A marvelously candy-colored and overall-pretty-fun-nothing-great-but-it's-all-right fantasy adventure.
Eric D. Snider-EricDSnider.com

Director Sam Raimi creates a magical experience for viewers in this beautiful and engaging prequel to "The Wizard of Oz."
John Hanlon-Big Hollywood

...Oz the Great and Powerful fares somewhat better than most similarly-themed, geared-at-kids big-budget fare.
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

It strays so far from the whimsy and joy of the original that you forget the two films are even part of the same universe.
Will Leitch-Deadspin

A poorly written film with a vibrant palette that cannot hide the wickedness in its soul.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

I may sound like I'm tripping in a field of poppies, but the secret to this film's success seems to be James Franco.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

This eye-filling fantasy is an entertaining riff on how the Wizard of that immortal film found his way to Oz.
Leonard Maltin-indieWIRE

Thick with director Sam Raimi's gonzo flourishes, but thin on character.
John Serba-MLive.com

For a movie that looks gorgeous, evokes memories of a cinematic classic and boasts a bundle of star power, Oz the Great and Powerful is oddly flat.
Forrest Hartman-Reno Gazette-Journal

The funny, warm-hearted "Wizard of Oz" prequel "Oz the Great and Powerful" veers far enough from the Yellow Brick Road paved by the original film to avoid dangerous direct comparisons.
Carla Meyer-Sacramento Bee

It pushes its gospel of modern "magic" - one third science, one third show biz, one third motivational speech - with Disney Channel earnestness.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

Raimi's 'Oz' is nothing more than a grand theft of a 74-year-old vision, thinly veiled in over-saturated colors and populated with action-figure friendly characters sure to set the Mouse's cash registers ringing.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

True...the odds were stacked against Raimi in his film that has some moments but hardly seems momentous.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

big and splashy but tin-eared
Chris Barsanti-Film Racket

Looking backwards in more ways than one.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

Stunning visuals, some suprising plot twists, dreadfully mediocre dialogue delivered by a woefully miscast James Franco.
Marc Fennell-Triple J

Sam Raimi has managed to recapture the feel and charm of the original 'Wizard of Oz'... and that may be the greatest compliment of all.
Kevin A. Ranson-MovieCrypt.com

The script is the real problem, lacking in humor and wit (not to mention jaunty musical numbers) and emphasizing the type of sensory overload that seems to pass for family entertainment these days.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

Raimi tries to go all in, but the update can't match the character of the original

Review For Movie Tiger Eyes
Remarkably, the story, adapted by Blume with her son, director Lawrence Blume, seems as fresh, painful and poignant as when she wrote it.
Chris Vognar-Dallas Morning News

There are no surprises among the characters - depressed mom (Amy Jo Johnson), controlling aunt (Cynthia Stevenson), new boyfriend (Tatanka Means) - but the cast is strong enough to build on familiar elements.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

Time has robbed Blume's subjects of shock value, but her perceptiveness hasn't dimmed. The movie's sincerity carries it along, and makes this story endearing despite its filmmaking clichés.
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

This attenuated coming-of-age tale oozes heart and perhaps too much respect for its source material.
Jeannette Catsoulis-New York Times

A gentle, honest and shrewdly realized film ... It's worth seeking out.
Michael Phillips-Chicago Tribune

Catnip for the bookish emo demo.
Justin Lowe-Hollywood Reporter

Tiger Eyes' characters are so obvious as to be underlined and color-coded.
John Wirt-Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA)

Guided by a gentle pace, this is a quiet film, in tone and in its acting.
Kent Turner-School Library Journal

... a perceptive work that should connect with young audiences and proves that Blume's emotional ideas still resonate.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

Tender, well-acted teen drama is true to classic Blume book.
Sandie Angulo Chen-Common Sense Media

A leaden, rushed movie, with Blume's own son responsible for mucking with the nuances of the source material, flattening promising conflicts and painful introspection.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

Tiger Eyes takes youth angst to another level in this page to screen adaptation. Touching on teen alcoholism and pregnancy, atom bombs, and aboriginal life in Los Alamos.
Prairie Miller-WBAI Radio

Warm, poignant and family-friendly with a rushed, contrived ending.
Avi Offer-NYC Movie Guru

Directed and constructed without distinction; nevertheless, it is quite moving, thanks to Blume's storytelling and the sincerity of the performances.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Tiger Eyes retains some of the seriousness and respect for character that distinguishes Blume's YA books. What it lacks, however, is her strong authorial voice.
Ethan Alter-Television Without Pity

Cheaply made, for just over two million dollars, Tiger Eyes looks under-populated, even for its Southwestern milieu, with the feel of a made-for-TV movie, not an indie film, which is how it's being promoted.
Marsha McCreadie-Film Journal International

A moving depiction of a teenage girl's quest for a way out of her sadness, grief, and loss over the sudden death of her beloved father.

The director, Harold Guskin, and writer, Sandra Jennings, show admirable patience in letting the story unspool, and the actors reward them.
Neil Genzlinger-New York Times

None of it hangs together - particularly as the film heads into his final third, and you realize director Harold Guskin and screenwriter Sandra Jennings don't have a clue as to how to wrap things up.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

Gandolfini and Janssen dance a delicate minuet around one another, pacing out a slow, quiet revelation of the shared past that has paralyzed their wills to happiness and change.
Ella Taylor-NPR

Costa brings a nice, lived-in sexiness to the evocatively shot setting, and Gandolfini settles into his character with extraordinary skill and sensitivity.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

Brando-wheezing Gandolfini never slums it, but there's still no shaking the sense that a pro has shown up for amateur hour.
Eric Hynes-Time Out New York

Any moments of honesty are immediately drowned out by a blast of heartfelt tunes that assure you the scene you've been watching was significant.
Stephanie Carrie-Village Voice

In terms of pace, Down the Shore walks a very narrow line between deliberate and utterly languid, but there are just enough strong performances and intriguing (if messy) dynamics to make it work.
Simon Brookfield-We Got This Covered

A small-scale, working-class character study that's never quite as nuanced and dramatic as it aspires to be.
Ethan Alter-Television Without Pity

An actors' showcase melodrama that captures [small town New Jersey] as a prison where characters are doomed to serve penance for sins of the past.

Down the Shore suggests what might happen if TBS and Bruce Springsteen were to collaborate on a sitcom set in hell.

Review For Movie Peeples
Saves itself from a complete belly flop by its good-natured charm.
Laremy Legel-Film.com

Writer-director Tina Gordon Chism implies that people should accept each other for who they are, but with no genuine insight to back up this moral, it feels hollow.
Ben Sachs-Chicago Reader

The slapstick is often clunky, but Robinson has a sweet jester's disposition that keeps many of the gags from collapsing.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

It's often rote and by-the-numbers, but writer-director Tina Gordon Chism injects the proceedings with enough smart chat, clever situations and spot-on casting choices to make this well-traveled road feel a little less stale.
Alonso Duralde-The Wrap

A meet-the-parents-and-their-rigid-disapproval comedy, with a bit of fish-out-of-water humor tossed in.
Connie Ogle-Miami Herald

Even the bouncy score sounds like it was lifted from an old Three's Company episode; that is when they're not all belting out a song about where it's not cool to pee.
Linda Barnard-Toronto Star

This messy and oftentimes obnoxious comedy relies too often on cheap humor to get its points across.
John Hanlon-Big Hollywood

It's a broad comedy about family dysfunction that provides some scattered laughs amid a story that is woefully familiar and predictable.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

How did they convince Kerry Washington to be in this mess? Talk about a scandal!
Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com

[Writer/director Tina Gordon Chism is ] good at low-key, observational humor, and the all-around excellent cast swings with aplomb from silly to sweet.
Kimberley Jones-Austin Chronicle

The arch and resolution are some indication of how utterly lifeless Peeples is, both in the sense of lacking vitality and having no real connection to how people think, feel and react to situations.
David Berry-National Post

Let's be honest -- harmless it may be, but bad it most certainly is.
Ken Hanke-Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)

No one looks more lost in the movie than Washington, its biggest right-this-moment star.
Michael Smith-Tulsa World

Formulaically funny, utterly familiar, fish-out-of-water story with a few absurdly engaging comedic touches.
Susan Granger-SSG Syndicate

A Tyler Perry in producer-name only, 'Peeples' is an uneven comedy with a few laughs and no surprises.
Linda Cook-Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)

Craig Robinson deserves better. So do Kerry Washington, David Alan Grier, and everyone else who stands before the camera in this clunker.
Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat

Funny but formulaic comedy has some edgy content.
S. Jhoanna Robledo-Common Sense Media

Pleasant, if inane - helped along by a likable cast that's clearly having fun.
Bilge Ebiri-Vulture

Better than pretty much everything else associated with Tyler Perry, but that's still not saying much. A talented cast is wasted.
Chris Bumbray-JoBlo's Movie Emporium

Surely it would have been easier to shoot in Perry's home base of Atlanta, but the significant New England location places the movie at the geographical heart of America's origin story...
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Passably endearing despite its sometimes pronounced shortcomings.
Jason Buchanan-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Given the quality of the cast,...this highly uneven, ill-constructed comedy is a disappointment.
Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion

Robinson and Washington make a likable couple, and it's nice to see her playing comedy for a change.

Review For Movie Like Someone in Love
Making only his second film outside of his native Iran, Kiarostami undercuts the rigid protocols of polite Japanese society with intimations of violence.
Michael Posner-Globe and Mail

Kiarostami's apparent simplicity masks serious complexity.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

Kiarostami is masterful in his layering of space, using glass walls, mirrors, and, in one instance, the aligned side windows of parked cars to suggest a world of divisions, both between people and within them.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

Maybe it all serves a purpose, but a movie about empty people doesn't necessarily have to feel empty itself.
Tom Long-Detroit News

A Rorschach test of our own responses to the intimate drama unfolding before us.
Jeff Shannon-Seattle Times

The latest small, perplexing masterpiece from the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, who in recent years has chosen the path of a world director.
Ty Burr-Boston Globe

There's some artful fiddling with plot expectations, but the film's evident self-regard makes this a rather undergraduate provocation.
Siobhan Synnot-Scotsman

[An] infuriating - but also fascinating - effort ...
Alistair Harkness-Scotsman

Like Someone in Love... is like a puzzle that takes an eternity to complete and yet still somehow contains too few pieces to be taxing.
Ryan Gilbey-New Statesman

As an exercise in conveying place, mood and human foible, this is consistently intriguing.
David Parkinson-Radio Times

[Kiarostami] almost throws up something magical, here.
Charlotte O'Sullivan-This is London

This is an intriguing, elliptical affair, the emphasis on reflective surfaces (and off-screen voices) reminding us that we are only ever seeing an opaque refraction of the whole picture.
Mark Kermode-Observer [UK]

The septuagenarian's most playful tendencies have been liberated and he has started to make films that look like the work of a younger director raised on vintage Kiarostami.
Tara Brady-Irish Times

A frustratingly inscrutable film that fails to engage.
Allan Hunter-Daily Express

[A] beautiful, subtly tender and narratively slight film ...
Tony McKibbin-The List

A major statement from one of the world's greatest living filmmakers.
Andrew Schenker-Little White Lies

Gnomic, anfractuous, inconsequential.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

Like the best dreams always do, it ends with a jolt, but its ideas and images linger like dust in sunlight.
Robbie Collin-Daily Telegraph

A tender and touching drama about a young high-class escort who forms a connection with an elderly widower, but certain scenes in this quiet slow-burner feel overstretched and arguably unnecessary.
Jennifer Tate-ViewLondon

A film that feels unique and innovative.
Stefan Pape-HeyUGuys

Now practically an exile from his homeland, Kiarostami follows Certified Copy with another film-literate relationship drama with the enigmatic overtones of Hitchcock.
David Parkinson-Empire Magazine

From the incredible opening shot onwards, it's clear Kiarostami's cinematic language translates perfectly in any setting.
Philip Concannon-The Skinny

Like Someone In Love explores familiar Kiarostami themes - how we slip between roles in our relationships - with a terrifically light touch, making for his best since 1999's The Wind Will Carry Us.
Tom Dawson-Total Film

Veteran Director Abbas Kiarostami's Like Someone is a fine followup to his brilliant Certified Copy. It's lovely, intriguing, stylish and very, very good.
Tim Cogshell-Alt Film Guide

The movie is filled with examples of and references to methods of communication: Books, faxes, cell phone messages, answering machines, intercoms, misunderstood jokes, traffic signals, the honking of car horns, a painting of a parrot learning to speak...

They helped the army kill more than one million alleged communists, ethnic Chinese, and intellectuals in less than a year. As the executioner for the most notorious death squad in his city, Anwar himself killed hundreds of people with his own hands. (c) Official Site

Review For Movie The Act Of Killing
Oppenheimer allows murderous thugs free rein to preen their atrocities, and then fobs it all off as some kind of exalted art thing. This is more than an aesthetic crime; it's a moral crime.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

Whatever you call it, The Act of Killing is a must-see.
Ann Hornaday-Washington Post

It's a mind-bending film, devastating and disorienting, that disturbs us in ways we're not used to being disturbed ...
Kenneth Turan-Los Angeles Times

[It] may be one of the most horrifying films you'll ever see, and one of the most edifying.
Joe Morgenstern-Wall Street Journal

It will leave you breathless.
Linda Barnard-Toronto Star

It's a virtually unprecedented social document.
Bob Mondello-NPR

If director Joshua Oppenheimer occasionally loses his way in his own narrative, where this picture demands attention is in its chilling portrait of indoctrination and evil.
Dustin Putman-DustinPutman.com

It's a gut-wrenching and emotionally exhausting look at impunity that resonates far beyond its obscure central conflict.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

A cynically exploitative film made in the name of human rights, which it has about as much to do with as the Punked show on MTV.
Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews

Presenting a terrifying view of a hidden holocaust and a moral apocalypse in which the most basic humanities have become twisted beyond recognition, The Act of Killing is a towering achievement in filmmaking, documentary or otherwise.
Jessica Kiang-The Playlist

The magnitude of this achievement, this depiction of a diseased and corrupt society that is in so many ways similar to our own, cannot be understated.
Robert Levin-amNewYork

I have watched hundreds of hours of war crimes, genocides and miscarriages of justice carried out by unremarkable men with dimly lit souls. "The Act of Killing" bids to outdo them all.
Steven Boone-RogerEbert.com

Atrocity hides beneath a grandfather's gentle smile in "The Act of Killing," Joshua Oppenheimer's remarkable, unnerving documentary portrait of barbarity and its lasting legacies.
Greg Evans-Bloomberg News

As filming continues, the quiet brilliance behind the assignment comes to light.
Manori Ravindran-National Post

Ultimately, The Act Of Killing acknowledges that while Oppenheimer may have subtly tortured their conscience, these thugs are paying no real price.
Noel Murray-The Dissolve

Prepare to be shocked, disgusted, enraged and emotionally devastated. It's the most terrifying film in years.

Movie Overview For The Act Of Killing

The Killing was Stanley Kubrick’s first film with a professional cast and the first time he achieved public recognition as the unconventional director he’s now known for. The story is of ex-prisoners who plan to set up a racetrack so they can live a life without monetary worries. One of the more exceptional films of the 1950’s.
